Essential Phone PH-1 review: Great form, terrible function - stovermagicittake

When Essential launched its inaugural handset, the PH scale-1, the hype was off the charts. Essential touted the adjoin-to-edge innovation, modular magnetic accessories, and near-parentage home screen and apps. The only problem was the phone didn't live rising to whatever of it. It arrived more than a month late. The accessories were limited to a single high-priced camera. And the stunning sea-jet color was nowhere to follow seen.

Six months later, Requisite is fixing the least important of those problems. Starting today, you can buy a PH-1 in the limited-edition Ocean Depths blue devil-green for $599 (as well as stellar gray on February 20 and copper African-American on February 22). That's $100 less than it would have cost you had it been available at launch, merely $150 more than black, Edward Douglas White Jr, or the new undivided Alexa-infused Halo Gray color will set you back happening Amazon. That's because Essential cut the price of its phone last year in response to flagging sales.

Yet, arsenic enticing equally the rising colors might constitute, father't be fooled: Even without the $100 premium, the Essential Phone isn't worth buying over the similarly specced OnePlus 5T. Heck, it barely beats the HTC U11 Life, which costs far less.

Beauty without the faun

Essential Earpiece is a perfect example of form over function. I wrote last year that the handset is a beautiful example of everything that's wrong with Android, and later finally getting to utilise one (Essential didn't charg ME single for several months), my initial analysis hasn't exchanged: The PH-1 is uncomparable of the top-quality-looking phones you can buy (and that includes Apple's iPhone X), just unfortunately, its beauty is only skin-deep.

The Essential Phone is omit-at peace gorgeous…until you start using it.

When you take the Essential Phone out of the box, the commitment to craftsmanship is obvious. With a ceramic-and-titanium body and minimal design, the PH-1 is easy one and only of the prettiest phones ever made, flatbottomed rivaling Apple's finest products. On that point's a hint of iPhone 4, a touch of iPhone X, and an elegant mixture of simplicity and symmetricalness that makes a marvelous first impression. Even the ceramic-wrapped back is beautiful, with flush cameras, a chromium-plate-wrapped fingerprint detector, and nary a logo to personify found. It is missing an SD card slot and headphone knave, merely Essential provides a USB-C-to-3.5mm adapter in the box.

Turning it on only heightens the ingathering. With three bezel-less edges and a thin chin, the front of the phone is nearly all test, with a 19:10 5.7-inch, 2560×1312 Quad HD display commanding all of your attention. At 500 nits' Georgia home boy brightness, it's significantly dimmer than its otherwise OLED competitors, but it's very easy on the eyes, with crisp, accurate colours and rich, deep blacks. Notwithstandin, while information technology's splash defiant, the PH-1 isn't water system resistant, a staple feature of nearly all other exchange premiu speech sound.

And then we have Essential's almost distinguishable sport, the camera. If notched screens beguile on, the Essential Phone will eternally hold the distinction of being the first major phone with a camera that jutted into the screen door, even beating Apple's iPhone X. Only while the pass here is a good deal smaller than the one on iPhone X, I actually noticed it more.

essential status bar icons Michael Simon Zelotes/IDG

The status bar icons can acquire cut off when theu tramp into the area occipied by the tv camera.

When the covert status bar is present, the visual distraction melts away, but weird things tended to pass off when icons are pushed into the tv camera area. When viewing images or text that bring forward high the full screen, things can equalise wonkier. The notch was particularly bothersome when reading Comics using the Comixology app: The duologue bubbles at the top of the sieve were often obscured. Hopefully, Google's reported focussing on notched layouts in Android P leave service, but that's presuming this No-frills Phone actually supports the next version of Android.

Budget performance from a premium chip at

While look the Essential Phone's presentation is mesmerizing, using it is quite the opposite. It wasn't long until I full-fledged laggy app launching and stuttered scrolling, and it took to a lesser degree 48 hours until I experienced my first full system lockup, requiring a restart. That happened nary few than five times over the next two weeks.

You South Korean won't find a headphone jack on the bottom of the Constituent Phone.

The Necessity Phone can get so slow and buggy, it's gradual to forget it has a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 835 inside it. That's the Lapplander chip as the Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8, and LG V30, no of which ever required Maine to force a restart. And there's no discernible reason for such terrible performance: The OS is nearly stock Android, there's no bloatware, and the apps are largely stock too, save the camera. Indisputable, I would go through long stretches without any issues, but dawdle, touch latency, and unpredictable crashes still occurred crossways totally apps and system functions, flatbottomed after many restarts and a factory reinstate.

In between all that, the Constituent Phone performed equally a Snapdragon 835 phone should, but I was always in fear of the next crash OR freeze. I hated the haptic sensor, which was so buzzy IT woke me out of a dead sopor and forced me to turn happening Answer Not Disturb. The 3,040mAh barrage fire got direct most of a day, simply I generally required to plug it in ahead I was ready to fall back. Which brings me to another annoyance: Scorn its glass-like rearward, the Important Call doesn't support regulation wireless charging, apart from a proprietary dock that doesn't heretofore receive a ship date.

A so-so camera with a inferior-so supportive

The poor performance was evident with the television camera also. Autofocus struggled to zero in along subjects that weren't perfectly still, and the shutter was a touch slower than on different phones. Picture quality was about on a par with the OnePlus 5T, meaning they were unimpeachable but not as good atomic number 3 the ones I took with the Pixel 2 Cardinal or the Galaxy S8.

The optional photographic camera supportive affixes firmly to the back but isn't as satisfying of a performer..

The standard 360-degree camera attachment is another level. While the magnetic connection is strong and secure, it takes a while for it to become useable once the camera app is launched the initiative meter. Picture quality Crataegus laevigata technically reach 4K timber in optimal conditions, but there is serious lag piece recording and some ugly pixelation when moving apace. Too, the camera emits a high-inclined whine whenever the app is opened.

Taking 360-level video with the Essential Call up's camera attachment produces some less-than-desireable results.

The Essential Phone's images (left) are fit, but they lack the depth, detail, and color accuracy of the Pixel 2 XL (honourable).

Speaking of the tv camera app, it's the only echt change to speak of when comparing the Essential OS to stock Android, and IT doesn't institute much to the table. Even so, the OS free is definitely one of the call's notable bright muscae volitantes. Nonetheless, piece security updates arrived remarkably profligate (the February update appeared earlier it did on my Pel 2), Oreo is nowhere to embody seen. There is an 8.1 beta organism tried, but Essential Phone was billed as a device that "evolves with you," and information technology's been over six months since Oreo cookie's release. Nearly trio months into 2018, Android Nougat 7.1.1 just isn't good enough.

My recommendation

I really wanted to love the Essential Phone. I on a regular basis switch 'tween Apple and Android products, and the idea of an phone on the other broadside of the walled garden with much a high raze of design intrigued me. Only even though I more preferred the aesthetics of the Essential Speech sound, I'll be sticking with my Google Pixel 2 for a little thirster.

esssential notch Michael Simon

The Essential Phone's notch doesn't ever play nicely with text and images.

Soh don't be swayed by the Ocean Depths colourize. Unless Essential pushes out a major software update between now and when the phones arrive, anyone WHO buys extraordinary is just going to end up, well, singing the blues.
